Atefeh Riazi and CIOs Without Borders in Forbes

Mark Minevich recently interviewed Atefeh Riazi for Forbes and discussed CIOs Without Borders and how it was formed.

I then moved on to Ogilvy, the marketing communications firm, as its CIO. The industry was going through significant changes—embracing digital, building a relationship with consumers, investing in search optimization, and replacing TV advertising with online. Branding was changing. To accommodate all this, I traveled extensively to deploy technology across five hundred offices in a hundred countries. During one trip, I found myself in a town in China called Guoyu, where I witnessed the impact of e-waste on the environment. Little children and pregnant women were dismantling equipment containing lead and mercury! It was something I couldn’t get out of my head—and so when I returned to New York, I founded a nonprofit called CIOs Without Borders, to encourage technologists to use their skills and experience for social good.

CIOs Without Borders focused on using technology to address social issues globally while advocating against on-line child and human trafficking as well as environmental policies around ewaste.
